Steam OS is available for download
As promised , Valve released yesterday evening ( 14 ) to download the Steam OS , Linux -based operating system that should equip future Steam Machines . The download file - which has 960 MB - can be done via this link.
In addition , at least 300 lucky users should receive this week the first 300 units of prototypes for testing. Even with the OS at hand , a beta , Valve version recommends that users take caution before doing the installation . " Unless you are an extremely familiar with Linux user, we recommend that you wait until 2014 to do the installation ," said Valve in a statement.
Valve has also published a FAQ (in English ) that includes installation instructions . The company makes it clear that the Steam installation OS will erase everything you have on your machine . Based on Debian 7.1 , Steam OS is initially compatible only with NVIDIA GPUs , since they work with the drivers from Intel and AMD are still underway .
