Sony and Panasonic Announce Archival Disc, the successor to Blu-ray media
Sony announced on Monday (10) the "Archival Disc", the next step in the evolution of the Blu-ray media which can store up to 1 TB of content on a single disc.
Currently, Blu-rays used in the film industry as well as the PlayStation 3 consoles, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, arriving just 50 GB.
Developed in conjunction with Panasonic, the Archival Disc is described by Sony as "a new milestone for next generation optical discs for professional use, in order to expand the market for digital long-term storage."
The first systems with technology will be launched in the third quarter of 2015, with a storage capacity of 300 GB. Future versions of 500 GB and 1 TB, has not yet projected date.
The new technology is not compatible with the current generation of platforms, but its existence exemplifies one of the storage possibilities that will be available in the next cycle of consoles.
